It had been a game drive the likes of which I’d only dreamed.

“Well, now you know – lions can climb trees!” said our guide Brandon, pointing to a lioness stretched out on a large branch of an umbrella thorn tree. It was late afternoon in the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango, the sky edged by clouds just turning pearly pink with the setting sun. Not far from the snoozing lion was a herd of impala and wildebeest, unperturbed at the presence of a predator. The cacophony of bird sounds had been joined by the first of the crickets and reed frogs – the start of the night choir. We watched until she got up and awkwardly, with infinite care, made her way down to terra firma.
